I clicked on the self help button that was provided and found that I had a whole lot of add on tool bars that I have no idea where they came from or how they got there. I clicked on them to stop them. How do I prevent this from happening again.

A lot of these 'Toolbars' are added by default, by software that you install.
Always read the screens when installing any software and if you see anything connected with adding toolbars, make sure that you untick the boxes before carrying on.

Most of these toolbars are added by the vendors, just to make money.
They are not necessary and a lot of them have a certain adware or tracking ability.
They can also take over your search settings.

I personally only use the 'Menu bar' and Navigation bar' that comes with Firefox.... and nothing else.
Have never installed any additional toolbars.
